First Dave Song

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

First Dave Song

Unread post by tbone » Fri Jan 24, 2003 11:14 pm

Quick question.... What would be the best Dave song for a semi-beginner to learn first. Someone who knows some basic chords some basic scales??? Any help would be appreciated

I can relate. First song I learned was "Crash" (simply b/c it was a song the girls loved at college) plus it is relatively easy with minimal cord changes although it does require a strech but you will get used to it. Some other neat songs that are easier include "Pay for What You Get" and "Typical Situation." Just listen to the songs for tempo and play along.

The first full song that i learned was Ants marching. There are basic chords, slides, muting, some quick hand movement, and those famous "dave chords" as kanter puts it. A lot of everything there.

Crash was the first song I learned as well. It will definitely strengthen your hand some. Song that Jane Likes is built with basic chords, for the most part, and is pretty easy to learn.

I would say just jump in. Pick a song you like, and learn it. As long as you're having fun, you'll keep playing more and more; that's the key to getting better.

crash was the first song i learned, i learned it in about a week, i played it for a talent show with a vocalist and another guitar player, both sucked and everyone complimented me on my "awesome" guitar playing. crash was just simple chord strecthes, but it amazes people for some reason. and all the girlies in the crowd yelled at the top of their lungs when the realized we were playing crash, i would recommend playing crash if you are a beginner, it gets the girls and it sounds awesome

you a playa :)

yeah Crash was one of my first ones too, but I found it tough to get the timing and strum pattern  but I was just beginner at the time. Crush and BOWA, Two Step were early ones too, but I played them with just standard chords. It was good practice though - both for strenghtening the hand, callusing the fingertips and developing timing and rhythm. Any song will do this if you just put the time into it.

peace
good, and you?

The first Dave song I learned in full was Dancing Nancies. It was the G and F# barre/Dave chords that made it sound to me like you were playing more than you actually were (If that makes any sense at all). The chord changes aren't too tough for a beginner either.

speaking of crash making girls all crazy, one time at a school event i went up on stage and started to play crash (this was all a dare) all the girls went crazy, just like anyone would guess, and i said (while i kept playing)
"anyone here know this song? well thats too bad, cuz im not playin it!!"
and then busted out into 'if youre gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough' by roger alan wade.
i felt like an asshole but it was funny and i got 50 bucks out of it

anyways i made up for it later that night when the band i play drums for went up and we actually did play crash, after i apologized to 'all the ladies'
and the girls were so happy that we got a lot of attention at a party later that night

a little off the topic, but a funny story i think

The first Dave song I ever learned was ants marching. It's mostly just a D and a G with that fill in between. Some other good beginers would be #41 and the song that jane likes.
