Easier Version or Method of Playing Dave Songs for Beginners
I was just wondering for instance what all these chords are in the songs.
Like If I wanted to strum Lover Lay Down or Best of What's around.
What are the actual chords he is playing? Are they Bm or C#m7 ect....????

Well in Best of what's around the verse is: Am F G C G F G then back to Am. just listen for the changes. it works. I used to play it like that and it was fun and sounded good. took me awhile to learn the correct way but this was good at the time. The chours is: A C#m F#m C#m D11 (x5403x) A E A and so on.
hope this helps ya get started.

You should learn things the right way first. You'll progress a lot faster. I know you want to impress your friends with a bunch of songs...but if you cant play a song the right way, keep learning other stuff until your skills develop to the point where you can. You'll save yourself a lot of re-learning later.

Look, I'm really not trying to be annoying here, but youre trying to form sentences without learning the alpahbet. Grave is able to do that because he hasnt taken shortcuts.
Learn the fretboard. Youll be able to figure out those chords easily.

I don't mean to be annoying either... but how do you figure that playing dave songs dave's difficult way is the alphabet... these are more like epic poems... its the simple chords that are the alphabets of rhythm guitarists not tricky fingering and tons of muting and sliding.... just my two cents...mbgreen wrote:Look, I'm really not trying to be annoying here, but youre trying to form sentences without learning the alpahbet. Its a metaphor. I think you might be confused...I'm sort of saying the same thing you are. Learn the basics before attempting the "epic poems." I'm saying that you cant just magically decipher chords, or understand the chord structures of dave's (or anybody's) songs. You have to put in work, and learn the basics first...tomek322 wrote:I don't mean to be annoying either... but how do you figure that playing dave songs dave's difficult was... is the alphabet... these are more like epic poems... its the simple chords that are the alphabets of rhythm guitarists not tricky fingering and tons of muting and sliding.... just my two cents...mbgreen wrote:Look, I'm really not trying to be annoying here, but youre trying to form sentences without learning the alpahbet. Edit: To further clarify, I'm not saying learning dave's songs the right way are the basics. I'm saying if you cant play them the right way, play easier stuff until you can play them the right way. Work up to a hard dave song if you cant play it. Dont try to read Dante if you cant read Dr. Seuss (extreme metaphor, but you get the point.)

yea...you're not meant to be able to just pick it up and be able to play it, work on this stuff and work on your other basics and just play play play, before you know it you'll be good

mb, I think you had another good point that I hope didnt get lost in the thread. knowing even just a small amount of theory, along with knowing a little bit of the fretboard, is a HUGE help when learning a dave song or any song, or even finding different methods to play songs (the solo tab on this site for Grey Street for ex)...that way, you'd know that xx6xx5 is an A and a C#, and is (basically) an A major, likewise, xx5xx5 would be A minor, etc. that can all be determined fairly easily, for a small investment now you get an enormous return throughout your guitar playing experience
