tone is in your technique, unless you are plugged in, then electronics come into play...simple eq work can make a good guitarist's "tone" sound bad while the playing still sounds good and vice versa

if you don't want to "drop the bucks" on the DL4, go with a Boss DD-6...you will get the delay options and the 5 second loop...but if you want the longer loop time and the ability to stack tracks easily on the fly, go with the DL4...i have both...i rarely use my DD-6, but some people swear by them.....

try playing a Taylor with cocobolo back/sides in a dred body type...you will get the volume from the coco, the spruce can handle the flat picking and still have the beautiful fingerpicking sound:

the trick is to find one that is as transperent as possible...AER does it best in my opinion, but for $550, you might be looking at a the Fishman -

how much are you looking at spending?

I loved the sound of an Ultrasound Pro...
The Fishman acoustic amp was a close second...
and best (and most expensive) would be an AER amp...

i used to love my Gibson SST for jamming with outher people...my Taylor 814ce is my main guitar, but, because the expression system is so transparent, it needs some EQ attention to get that "cut" through a band

although Martin is renound for the purest acoustic - all around - Taylor is making strides in terms of innovative design and structure (look into the new GS series)...they also have the market on pickups with the Expression System (very transparent) whereas a Martin will still work with Piezzo under...

i had a gibson sst for some time and i loved it...really good presence and balance...not really a true acoustic tone, but it is real handy for recording and even moreso when you are playing out live...cuts right through a drummer with a dry feed to a PA, very versitile...i wouldn't use it for playin...

if you listen to Tim, his sound is very unique, as well...a lot of that has to do with set-up and gear, but - at the same time - Tim could pick up a beater and you would still know it was him...I think the same goes with dave - so much of a "unique" sound depends on technique
