I used to just practice alternate picking the bass notes, kinda with a bluegrass sound until I got that down. Then I was able to play the bass note followed by the rest of the chord just like in the song. It definitely was challenging though, especially when you add the lyrics

My favorite acoustic guitars are Seagull. They have excellent sound and are extremely durable. You will get your money's worth guaranteed. Go play some and try them for yourself. Ebay has great deals on them too.
