Yeah, I fingerpick a lot and get really a really nice, bright tone with just a pretty normal nail-length, nothing coke-fiendishly long. You can still get great tone with shorter nails.

I just have Audacity, and I was looking to get a couple Shure SM57s (those seem to be one of the best mics you can get for the price)
