Mayer is notorious for using the "phantom pick" technique. He holds the pick in his palm while playing finger picking/slapping parts. Not too difficult to master w a little practice. jmtabs has some videos. Claypigeons.net has tons of acoustic videos, including many mayer songs. Maybe this will help...
