Do musicians usually combine scales when writing a solo for a song or do they stick to one?

I'm one of those people that skipped theory and went straight to tabs :? So I'm getting started with theory again. I have what sounds like a stupid question: can you combine scales when playing lead over a song? FOr example, with Watchtower, A minor and A minor Pentatonic both seem to work just fine...

Voice lessons would be the way to go IMO. Practice alone can only get you so far if you don't know what you're dong. I'm thinking about classes myself, but I'm going to have to wait until I hate the motivation/time. Also, it seems a bit of a waste because I only play for fun...I never do gigs or pla...
