This is how I play that part: Just prior to that part you play low E string, fret 3 using finger 2 which you also use to mute the A string. Leave the D string open. Use fingers 4 and 1 to play the G string and also to mute the B string. I try to avoid stumming the high E string but it's muted by one...

I agree with jkanter's method of figuring out the words that fall on chord changes. That's what I do when I first integrate the two. A word will not always fall directly on a chord change but shift it a bit so that it does. Then gradually fill in the rest of the lyrics. When your mind starts to get ...

What I usually do after figuring out all the parts separately is to do focused practise on just the transitions (either between different parts or looping back to the beginning of the same part depending on what happens). Play the last few notes of the first section and the first few notes of the fo...

I posted a tab in this forum here:
http://www.dmbtabs.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=388
It's a fingerpicked version but it's easy to figure out the chords to play it strummed.

Jay, I don't think it really matters that you get it EXACTLY down up down down up up up down up whatever. Find something that's comfortable for you, something that makes the song easiest to play, and go with that. That's my advice. The more you strum, the more intuitive the whole up/down thing will...

About the fast reply. I have a program that scans forum pages for words like "JTR", "DMB tabs", and "free pr0n" which alerts me. Just kidding, the speed of it is purely coincidental. No song is categorized as all ups, all downs, or both. It's really only one type which is down up down up and it is t...

I would say play "down-up down-up" for all the songs (that are non-fingerpicked). The trick is knowing how many down-ups per beat (and how long a beat is). It turns out that for Satellite verses, all the notes are played during the down parts. For the rhythm to JTR take a look at this: http://www.dm...

This is where I go for all my guitar learning needs (except for learning DMB of course). It's great for players of all skill levels especially beginners.

Hey Chump, do yourself a favor and download an mp3 of Raven from the 10-24 show where it's just Dave. It makes it considerably easier to learn if you strip out all of the other instruments. Will do. If I have trouble finding it, I'll just post again later. Thanks for the tip. and who ya calling chu...

It's a song you can really throw your feeling into as long as you're in the right mood. Playing around with accents and pauses. Fun stuff. Also Tripping Billies has nice room to do that. I've started to really listen carefully to the guitar in Raven from BS (I'm usually caught up in the lyrics). It ...

Hey folks, is it possible to post an idea without being blasted? I'm hoping this thread is a place for creative thought, not to prove your own vendettas. Yes, it can be hard to accept another's ignorance but everyone's stubborn so ya gotta do it. Anyway, just wanted to add and expand a bit. Another ...

Dave themes
Dave likes to revisit some common themes in his lyrics. Which themes can you think of? It would be interesting to hear about some themes that I never realized or interpreted in a different way. A common theme would be one that is covered somehow in at least 2 songs. Perhaps there's a theme that Dave...
