live on the radio (my side band)

Unread post by Xoosh » Mon Dec 15, 2003 7:15 pm

hey guys, 3 song mp3...
my band was invited to play on a radio "open mic" eventhough it wasnt really an open mic, there was quite a few people there to hear us play. I got uber nervous and over compensated the soloing, though im really up for some critiques... we played a little faster then usual due to my nervousness but i thikn it was a pretty cool "gig" and recording.

this mp3 is the pre-studio edited edition of the "show" becuase we got a cd of our performance right after we did it -- so the leveling is a little sloppy (they recorded individual channels) -- and because it was a radio gig we just had me and my guitarist. i played lead and stuff.. rock on :) PLEASE give me some critiques on the songs i really need them, we're starting to play out a LOT more... we're also gettin a lot of coverage because we're playing with some bands that are really doing hot (potentially opening for Howie Day later this year -- etc)

song 1 - on hands and knees
song 2 - phenominal woman (lyrics by Maya Angelou)
song 3 - jon's improv jam in Aminor

On hands and knees: The guitar really rocks! I don't have any problem with it. The vocals could use a little more soul. The song would be really great if she dug down and belted out the words.

Phenominal Woman: Once again, the guitar is solid. The singer seems a bit nervous....her voice quivers in places. If she sang with more emotion it would be perfect. I really like the music you've put behind this poem. It reminds me of Tracy Chapman.

jon's improv jam in Aminor: Guitar is pretty damn sick. I really like it. And I can't find anything that brings it down. Good shit!

If you'd have posted one song, I'd've said "awesome shit," but you gave me three songs and one idea. You play well, you pull off the lead style real well, and your companion guitarist go together nicely, but I just didn't feel like for a musical set, you have any variety. I feel like I heard the same guitar solo 3 times, sorry..

I always get bashed for criquing vocalists, but I still don't care

She didn't seem very into it.. she had some pitch issues and the end of lines.. but I get the feeling she is usually better than what I just heard..

Sorry, I know I'm critical, flame me if you like, just speaking my mind

man that doesnt bother me at all :) that's the kind of stuff i NEED to hear. =)

i definitely agree about the variety, we didnt play our softer songs because we wanted to show off... and becuase i think i was so nervous (and she as well) that ruined some of our usual energy.

thanks for listening, seriously =)

any recomendations for her voice? i think if we had slowed the songs down she could have really gotten into it more... =)

it's really hard to catch a melody with all the fast minor pentatonic scaling. I would suggest try less notes in the soloing and more emPHAsis on the root melody notes to bring out more melody...

Just my 2 cents.

As everybody else said...the guitar work is solid throughout the set. I like the jamming at the end of the second song. The third jam is great.

I thought the vocals were solid forf the most part. The Maya Angelou song sounded great on guitar but it seems like it was too fast for her to sing at parts. Almost like she was running out of breath. Probably due to nerves and all. She has a great voice overall though.
