help with the stone
just about everybody knows the intro riff to the stone. i've been able to play it forever, but i cant find anyone who knows the rest of the song! ive been watching the video of Dave playing it on tv (charlie rose show) and when he starts singing, it gets too complicated to figure out. if anybody knows what he's playing, please tell me...

It is a blessing for all of you new guitar players to have such as site as this one...the 8 years I have been playing I have had to do it by ear, or with the help of some sorry tab sites (some can really be off you know)!
Then, when you think you have the STONE down, you find somebody who has some notes different...I went through this with almost all Dave songs/a sort of weening process that started me off with playing the open cowboy chord to #41, to being able to play and sing all Dave songs...it is not that hard after you play them for long enough. The trick is (unless you want to be a exclusive Dave cover band) to never sacrifice your own style for somebody elses'; by doing the cowboy Am, Bm, Em, D chording, I developed a style and rythmn and sense of timing...the Stone was one that I (dare I say) "mastered" later after about a year and a half of playing my lame version of it...the thing is, I learned the strumming and timing off of an easier way of playing it!
WHATEVER YOU DO, before you can say, "well, I hit the right notes", make sure you can at least say, "my strumming is right on like the man himself!" The techniqal aspect comes into play later as a guitarist...
Well, I appologize if the advice may seem long, confusing or even boring, but all I can stress is that you get the muting, trapping and picking down LIKE A TOOL before you try to BUILD THE MACHINE.
Practice his STYLE and get it down...from there, you can play any of his songs with a little practice...FIREDANCER86

well, i practiced the song for 4 hours the other night.
i have it perfect now.
i dont think the part after the chorus is right though, either that or im playing it with the wrong rhythm, but other than that, ive got the picking and everything down.
what still amazes me is that dave can sing and play that song for so long! my hands feel like someone beat them with a meat tenderizer if i play it without stopping.
thanks for the help...

Starslight, dude. If the man hadn't wrote the song, would you feel better? This guy Is not a regular guy like you and us. sit back and watch him play and admire is abilities. Then later pick up your guitar and fool around with some stuff. I used to get discouraged when my cousin came over and blew me away with his guitar playin'. You just have to take breath and realize that it takes a lot of time and patience.
The way I learned the stone is first memorized the riffs seperately in sections - as slow and brutal as it was. Then I practiced to get them smoother and faster - as brutal as it was. Then I played along with the recording until I could play along with it for the whole song without forgetting what to play - as brutal as I would sound with the stereo off. Now that you at least have the rhythm and timing down, you can practice to make it sound better just by practicing it. and so on and so on. But it never really felt like practice, here I was trying to play one of the hardest and best songs from my favorite band. It's fun.
peace,
Ken

yo fellas, i'm new to the boards here.
i've been playing dave for about 3 years. ( Guitar for 5 years )
here's what i'll do for you. 8)
i'm gonna make some short video clips of my fingers while playing the song so you can see exactly what is going on, then i'll mix it in with the singing. hopefully it'll make more sense then.... hopefully i'll have it up later today ( November 7 )

Here's a tip for you guys. RELAX!!
Relax your hand and it won't hurt at all. I finally learned it 2 days ago, and almost immediately, much to my surprise, I am able to sing to it right on with dave. I've played along with the Charlie Rose, the album, the LS DVD, and some other solo ones. I'm pretty much right now. Not mastered yet, but just some cleaning up to do. If you make sure to relax your hand it won't hurt so much.
Up until this week, The Stone has been my Everest. Before that it was Tripping Billies, Jimi Thing, WWYS, SMTS. But with practice they all come. It's such a good feeling when they do come. Now I'm trying to learn IBYU. It's tough for me still. Hopefully I can have it in a week or so. Next up: Learn to scat so I can play crush solo, just like dave.
