Introduction to Improv ( how i do my shit) Method by Gumbo.

http://citruzjazz.250free.com/improvjpeg.jpg

This is the method (shortened and with less lecturing from my guitar instructor) that i used for learning to improvise well. (Im still learning, although my new guitar teacher is crushing my ass with all her new methods... Makes my improv seem like poo)

This is for those of you who dont know theory that well (only a little bit) and want to get into the improv.

If you think the method is shit.. listen to my purevolume account.
Im not saying i am master-improvization-man or anything.. but i feel that i can beat some of the other fools my age at my school who think i cant play cuz im fat! Hooray! BTW- this method is barely scratching how deep all these fingerings go, once you discover modes and all that.. this is introductory.

Anyway the method is in that link!
You might need this...
(its part of the method):

If anything is unclear in the article thing i made just tell me and i will repair it.

JOLLY GOOD!

EDIT... i fixed the link.. if you want to print it out or something.. ask me and i can give you a higher quality version. (AIM: gumbomadness)

hmm i read through it, i still dont see how this is a method. It basically tells you to improvise in the scales... and start with the root note... and what key to solo in..

that doesnt help much.. since nothing's new. or am i missing the fact of the method?? hmm.

because wouldnt that be obvious to solo in the scale of the key of the song...? and basically the "fingerings" are just sections of the whole scale.

i am not criticizing, i just want to understand to it fullest. you've done a good job trying to make it simple.

Well.. this is for those looking at improv COMPLETLEY new. There are alot of programs that give you the scales and put all the dots on the fret board..but when i first saw all that it seemed overwhelming.

im thinking this is a little easier since you can practice them one at a time.. and at the end .. they ALL fit together.
Different people learn and work different ways, this way worked really well for me...
now, im moving on to Arpeggios and things like that with my guitar teacher.
If you already knew all that then ::thumbs up:: to you, but this is for the people that want to improvise and dont really even know where to start, even if they are already writing songs and whatnot.

what scale? Its a generic fingering for ANY major scale.
The guitars tuning was made so that the notes fit moveable patterns, such as bar chords and chord shapes and all...
you can use those fingerings for ANY scale. So.. you could solo in any dave song (except for minarets and little thing practically-- since minarets needs harmonic minor fingerings) with them.

These are just the standard major scale box patters. You're also learning the modes of the major scale, minor being one of them.

This is the most common way to start learning scales. I always liked learning them this way because it's really visual but there are some pitfalls with these standard boxes. If you practice them you should be aware of where you are within the scale. You don't have to go overboard and learn what every degree is but you should at least have the root, 3rd, and 5th down.
