Amazing Grace Bass Tab

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Amazing Grace Bass Tab

Code: Select all

Amazing Grace
Free Time
You really need to work on this song and make it your own. Have fun with it.

Notes:

<x> = Frets over which to play harmonics
<x.x> = Frets that harmonic is found in between
~ = Bend or shake note
^ = Let note ring

Everytime he plays this song he does a few phrases of improv. Take some hints from Classical Thump, Sojourn of Arjuna, etc. Let all the harmonics ring, you'll get a feel for it. It's not a very difficult song.

While the last harmonic is ringing, you want to either bend it via tuning key or pressing down on the string above the nut. Let it ring while with your right hand you tap the D on the E string and let the raised harmonic and the G ring out to finish the song.

This is a basic version. It changes every time I play it. Hopefully this will be a guidline for you.

See? That wasn't hard. Listen to any version to get the entire idea of the timing. Play with the timing and durations of notes to get a different feel for the song.

hey man i dont know if you know this or just forgot to mention it but to achieve the exact same sound as Wooten you need to tune your bass ADGC. he does the amazing grace solo piece on his tenor bass or at least every take ive seen has been on it. Ive been playing it for a while now and i finally played it on a six string and just moved everything to the bottom four strings and it sounded perfect.

He does that on Live At The Quick, but on Live Art he uses EADG.

wait...that tab is the one ive always known to be right, with the beginning with the harmonics on the 5th fret, and ive watched both live and the quick and wooten live at bassday 98, and he does the same thing as this tab. so my assumption is that this tab is EADG. i didnt know he used his tenor on Live Art. if so, wouldnt he have to change the positions of everything, especially the harmonics?

he didn't use his tenor or live art. and no, you wouldn't have to change positions because harmonics have nothing to do with frets.

Nah, harmonics will always be in the same place on any string regardless of guage as long as the scale length is the same. so a bass tuned C# - F# - B - E - A - D - G - C - F - Bb - E (i think i got that right) will all have harmonics in the same position on every string.

A harmonic in the middle, or over the 12th fret, will be one octave higher then the open string. A harmonic OVER the fifth fret, or 24th fret, will ring out 2 octaves above the open string.
