Grey Street bass tab

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Grey Street bass tab

Unread post by street fish » Thu Apr 15, 2004 7:17 pm

Code: Select all

GREY STREET
4-string EADG

The chorus is based more on a live version. As is usual with Stefan, the live version is more consistent and not quite as busy as the album version. I used the Last Call video and the album version as a reference.

Verse.

G--------------------------------------------------------------
D--------------------------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------------
E----7----7-7\--3----5----2---------3----5----2---------7-5-0--(repeat as needed)

During the last verse, on "She says I pray"

G--------------------------------------------------------------
D--------------------------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------------------
E----7----9-10\--3----5----2---------3----5----2---------7-5-0-

Here's how the chorus works. Stefan is pretty faithful to a set arrangement. You'll find some ad-libbing more in the third chorus than anyplace else, but its still pretty close to this. See the variations noted at the end. The letters above the tab represent the chords, and the numbers in parentheses represent a different arrangement over the given chord. Listen to a recording to pick up the nuances. A tab can only tell so much.

First chorus.

-Bm(1)----------------------------|A/C#

G------------------------7--------|---------------------------------
D------------------7/9-----9-7----|----------/9---7-7---10-10---9\--
A-----------5---------------------|---4-----------------------------
E---7-----------------------------|---------------------------------

-D--------------------------------|G*

G---------------------------------|---------------------------------
D--------------7/9----------7-\5--|---5------7p5--5--4h5p4----------
A---5-----------------------------|-------------------------5--7\---
E---------------------------------|---------------------------------

-Bm(2)----------------------------|A

G-----------------4---------------|---------------------------------
D---------------4----4------------|---------------------------------
A---2-------------------------4-2-|---------------------------------
E---------------------------------|---5\--5\--5\--5\--5\--5\--5\----

So, the first chorus goes: Bm(1), A/C#, D, G, Bm(2), A.

Second chorus. During the second time through the progression, substitute Bm3:

-Bm(3)----------------------------

G---------------------------------|
D----------------/7---5---4-------|
A---2-----------------------7-5---|
E---------------------------------|-->continue at A/C#

The second chorus goes: Bm(1), A/C#, D, G, Bm(3), A/C#, D, G, Bm(2), A.

For the third chorus, play the first two times through the chord progression just like the second chorus. Then: Bm(3), A/C#, D, G, Bm(3), A/C#(2), D(2), G, Bm(2), A

-A/C#(2)---------------------------|D(2)----------------------|

G----------------------------7-7-9-|--11-----9-7--------------|
D-----------------7---7-7----------|-----------------7p9---7--|-->back to G
A---4-------/9---------------------|--------------------------|
E----------------------------------|--------------------------|

VARIATIONS

A/C# Stefan plays this on the album version. Same timing/rhythm, the fill is just a half step/step higher.

G---------------------------------
D--------/10---9-9---12-12---10\--
A---4-----------------------------
E---------------------------------

The only tough part of that song IMO is memorizing the chorus order for the choruses and what to play when...it's also faster than the tab makes it look, so just rip on it. play it slowly and just go faster and faster, then try playing to the cd.

Yeah, the tab shows you essentially what notes to play, but doesn't show that certain notes are triplets, or popped notes, etc. etc.

This song has eluded me forever until now. I actually sat down with it. Fun fun shit.
