Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Audio clip here (thanks to xero for hosting):
Dreaming tree
Code: Select all
DREAMING TREE
Played on a 5-string. Can be played on a 4-string tuned to drop D.
Main Riff:
G---------14----------------------14-------------------
D--0----------0------14-----15----------0-----14-------
A----------------15------0-----------------0------0----
E------------------------------------------------------
The instrumental interlude after the verse:
G---------2----------------------------------
D--0---------0-----2------------3--------5---
A---------------3-----0--1---------0--3-----0
E-------------------------------------------- (7 times)
Then the last time through,
G---------2-------------------------------------
D--0---------0-----2------------3--------5------
A---------------3-----0--1---------0--3-----3--0------>into chorus
E-----------------------------------------------
The chorus and lead in to the verses:
G-------------------------------
D-------------------------------
A-------------------------------
E--5------3------1--------------
B-----------------------3-------
G---------------------------------
D---------------------------------
A-----------------------2----/3---
E--5------3----------------------5---------
B----------------3----------------
Since the main riff and the interlude riff use only the top three strings, you can play the song on a 4-string tuned to drop D and then you can achieve the low D in the chorus.

Nice variation but the way stefan plays verse is the way it is on the site, youve got the interlude down, and the chorus.
You can throw in a little not in the verse to make it a lil more exciting
Code: Select all
Verse Fill ( One note difference lol )
G:---14---------14---------14---------17--------
D:-15--0---14-15--0---14-15--0---14-15--0---14----
A:-------15---------15---------15---------15----
E:-----------------------------------------------------------

I respectfully disagree.
And I'm not following the pattern in your variation there. . . Do you have something out of alignment?

I don't post here(this other instruments forum) nor am I a bassist, but i'd beg to differ that The 'Tender is right...
Though, now that i look at your work, it does seem pretty good.. since i'm not a bassist, i'll let you two work out the differences

Well, I'm not looking to start a conflict, but my tab is based on:
(a) listening
(b) working from the idea that a repeating riff is going to be based on natural, easy movements of the fingers as opposed to odd stretches and shifts in position
(c) a video of Stefan playing the verse riff with his hand and fingers in this position
I've attempted to play the tab posted on the site and unless I'm just reading it wrong, I can't get it to sound or feel right. I've listened to the clip, and it doesn't sound right.

Well if you know your time signatures, Dreaming Tree is played in 7 time, so the timings a bit funky. The key to playing it right is sorta of a quick but studdered pattern. If you want I could possibly post a clip of the verse. If you want a good idea of how its played check out stefans intro to All Along the Watchtower 12-21-2002 at Madison Square Garden ( I was there

). In the middle of the intro he breaks into the verse and the interlude. Check it out and youll see that the correct way to play the verse is on the site and the most common Dreaming Tree Bass tabs on the net.

Secondly, referring to his hand position is useless, in your version and the sites version his playing pattern would be almost identical, hed jus hit more open strings in your version. If ya want IM me and I'll show you

Dude, the audio clip on this site is incorrect, plain and simple. Mine might not be 100%, but the one on the site is wrong.
Do you have a video clip of this 12-21 thing or just audio? I think I have the audio somewhere. I think I was using audio from 9-8-02 at the Gorge back when I put my tab together.
When I was referring to hand position, I was talking about the one with the stretch down to the 9th and 10th frets from 14 and 15.
I recorded a clip on to my computer. I can send it to anyone that wants to hear.

I can e-mail the file. It is only 664 KB. I could actually re-encode it at a smaller bitrate. . .
Send me a PM with your e-mail address. (I'm not on AIM very often)

They pretty much sound the same, your just adding a few open notes into it. Itd be almost impossible to hear the difference with the band, unless you were steffan. And I dun think your steffan so, and Im sure as hell not, Id say its a tie.

To me, it sounds like the timing of yours is different. Your riff repeats more quickly. It is a 7-beat pattern, and the entire riff only repeats once every 7 beats. When I listen to yours it doesn't sound like it resolves back to 7. . . its more like 3-1/2. To count the 7 beats, go back to Dave's chord changes. He changes chords on the 1 beat. I think you pretty much have the correct notes, you're just playing the pattern twice as quickly as you should.
