Grace is Gone intro

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Grace is Gone intro

Unread post by scelestus » Sat Feb 28, 2004 11:58 pm

Hey, has anyone seen a tab anywhere for the guitar intro at the very beginning of the album version of GIG? I wasn't sure if this actually was Dave playing or Timmy or what. The guitar sounds different to me. But maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about. Anyways, if anyone has any ideas let me know. Thanks!

Yeah, I think that Steffan is playing a slide guitar on that intro. He did it in concert this summer (well, he did at the Gorge anyway). I couldn't tell you what/how to play that on acoustic.

First off, I made a slight change to the notation I used above to clarify how the figure is played.

For the first two slides, all you have to do is pick the two strings you want to sound, place the slide down on the two strings somewhere behind the first fret (close to the nut, but it doesn't have to be right on top of it), and move up the strings such that the slide is directly over the third fret. Then remove the slide and pick the open two strings again to get the second note. For the third slide, follow the same procedure as for the first two, but once the slide is over the third fret, pick the two strings again, then lift the slide and pick the open strings.

Also, make sure you pull out the recording and give the intro a good listen, as hearing what the lick is supposed to sound like is a big help in learning how it's played. Finally, if you're interested in playing slide guitar, I'd do a google search or pick up a book on (acoustic) slide guitar, as it involves general techniques I can't really get into in a single post. Good luck!

e-------------------------------------------------------------------
b--3--------------3--5^-3----------------------------------------
g----2----------------------2--4^-2------------------------------
d------4---0--------------------------0----------------------------
a----------------------------------------0-------------------------
d------------------------------------------3~-3~-3~--0---------[/code]

this is how i do it. i dont know how you would get it back to standard tuning to play the rest of the tune, but, thats how i do it. prolly not right, but, eh, its another opinion.
