So i was thinking of how much praise we give the LWS despite their only partial completion... and I thought that sometimes early versions of songs can be far superior to polished and finished versions. One song i've always felt very strongly about in this regard is Don't Drink the Water. Sure it has developed into the powerhouse, classic opener that we know and love... but in my opinion the raw emotion of Weight of the World and Leave Me Praying, the two early versions of ddtw before it was finalized for btcs) just can't be beat. I've taken the liberty of uploading the weight of the world and leave me praying for those of you that don't have them. Both are acoustic. I put the lyrics in there too. WotW is from the Til We Dance Away compilation, and LMP is from the Lost Acoustics.
Weight of the World
So we wrote
On precedents and angels
We wrote a book
We built a road out of nothing but a saying
Out of governments and police we build a book
Of how the things we know should be
So when a man comes with a difference
A woman comes with an idea
We crush it down to nothing in the fear that we will lose it
Open up the books
I’m guilty of it, too
Just like all of us
The information flies without us through
And say the way
This may now leave my head run over
And pass through a night so black, I can’t see you, oh
Hope from the speeches spoken in
Hope from the speeches made day in, day out
With money paid
And adverising raging
A woman and a child sleep well as the day ends
Raising me up
Raising me like a man, oh man
Oh mother everything good that I’ve gained I’ve gained from you
Oh and mother everything I know I learned from you, oh
But, the reign in the house so no one sees me
Oh, should we brothers and sisters upheave it?
I read a book of a man most worshipped
A man who most worshipped
For ideas and for the birth of freedom he showed
Well, in, oh in twenty years
He begged the revolutions come
So that no pig-headed bastard would steal you and my fun
Rain in the eyes
Rain in the mourning eye
Oh rain/reign in the love of my mother, and my daughter
And I hear the voices of women calling loudly and (here,
Holding, holding, holding)
And nothing should address this like our love for each other...
This land is your land
This land is my land
From california to new york islands
From the redwood forest
To the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
Rain/reign in the hour that we should lead it
And the brotherly love and go away
And rain/reign in the eyes that we should lead it
Leave Me Praying
Oh in excitement
Home that do we call this
We charge with an eye on the line
And we go over
Oh proud and strong
We come down on babies and mothers
And leave them to die
While we plant all over
And call it home
So weep at life and leave me pray there
But still I should call it home
...native soil
Has anyone stolen land
And I love it like no other
And now my grandfather say
Open your charge
You charge when the trumpet calls
Blow on your flute
Pound on your drum
Victory calls
Oh no mother and no child could resist this army
Drive on the west
We will plant we will grow
Wait and see my heart is bleeding
But still I should call it home
And teach my babies
My son and my daughter
To love this place
And share it with no one
Then we started we ???? bounty
I will plant my wheat
I will hold my land dear
I will protect my ones
I will protect my golden
I will stand up on top
And scream that I own this
But what if the spirit lies in the soil
Still should I call it home
And then I will tell
My sons and my daughters
To hold it so dear
And share it with all
And then I will tell
My sons and my daughters
To hold it dear
And share it with everyone
This land is your land
This land is my land
From California to the New York islands
From the red wood forests
To the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
Just dave's voice on some of those lines is pratically orgasmic when you crank up the volume. Powerful acoustic stuff.

So what do you guys think of these early tunes and how do they compare to the ddtw we have now?

Here's another version I found that I had... sounds earlier than both versions above, as dave completely ad libs it almost! Not sure if it's WotW or LMP... but it's labeled as Leave Me Praying, from the Til We Dance Away compilation.

hmm i cant decide. I love the version of leave me parying from the lost acoustics, but I hanve given weight of the world enough listens. I will have a final anwser by this evening. Ill be thinking about this all day, althouh Ive often pondered about the many different versions and when they came about. I think as far as the band goes, the DDTW lyrics were "finalized" way before BTCS. cool thread
and god bless the till we dance away set! i love it

do you have that entire comp?? what is on it?
hosting the oscars is like winning the heisman trophy. no matter how you do in the ballgame, or whatever, they can't take it away from you. and even if you kill your wife and an ex-waiter, they still have a hard time taking it away from you

ok i cant vote cause I already posted or something. But I would vote for Weight of the world. It has great lyrics. Allthough I think we all know that DDTW is the real winner here because it was picked by dave and the band, but its great hearing other renditions and critiquing. Once agian this is a great thread.

well if youre talkin about the kind of raw emotion and feeling there is in each...and youve got acoustic for weight of the world and leave me praying...then i dont think there is any contest that DDTW (CP style) dominates...

well durr but i don't have full band versions of the wotw and lmp. still, the emotion in the early versions is awesome. powerwise of course a full band ddtw will win, but still, for acoustic that shit is pretty intense.
