A tad frusterated
Hey guys,
I've read all the posts on Warehouse that I can find and most of them have been very helpfull. Everybody here is so willing to help out and that's why I love it here. However, I'm still having some trouble with the song. I started to learn Warehouse a long time ago, put it down, and am revisiting it. I'm a lot better at playing it then I used to be. However, I'm still having trouble with the intro/verse stuff. My rythm is fine and all, and I can hit the right notes, but I'm playing too many notes. I can't get the whole muting thing down. For those of you who can play it, how did you come around to playing it right? You know, with all the muting. I can't get my left hand to cooperate. What was it that made it click for some of you? Is there any advice on how to play the intro/verse correctly you can offer, other than practice practice? I do get better at it when I practice it, but for some reason I can't get it to sound quite right. Seen all the videos, read a lot on the boards about this song, but what helped you guys play the song better? Share stories and advice please!
Thanks again y'all,

When I first started to play it, I played the, 7, 9, 11 just picking each chord once along with an acoustic version of the song. I maintained the rhythm along with the song, I just didn't strum away like Dave does at first. Just a simple pick of the 7, 9, and 11, then I started to strum a little bit during the 7, 9, 10 right after that. But I first wanted to get the timing right, so like I said, I just picked each string by itself to get a feel for the timing, then the rhythm came about a week or so of playing it constantly trying to make sure that it sounded right. I don't know if you've tried this or not but, Dave does strum that song to death, put away your guitar, and strum on your leg to get a feel for what he's doing, I find that helps a lot when i get frustrated with songs. The intro/verse is all up and down strokes if I'm not mistakend, don't have my guitar at this point in time, but when you start to get the rhythm down, it's a constant movement, up, down, up, down. If you say that your left hand has got it down fairly well, you should be able to mute strings with that hand. Sleightly lift you fingers off the strings right after you hit them to make sure that you don't hit them again, or how Dave does it, as I'm sure you know since you've seen videos, he keeps his ring finger straight up in the air, wish use to amaze me, but right after he hit the 7, 9 he lays his ring finger over every string, cause your pinky will be making the note on the 11th fret, so it won't matter if your ring finger is across all the strings, it just keeps him from hitting those notes as well. And after a while, you'll learn that you won't have to mute anything and that you will be able to hit the string that you want everytime after, ugh took me long enough to say this, practice, but that is the key. Hope what I said helps, or at least makes sense, if not let me know, and I'll clear it up for you, good luck

Dude, thank you very much. I appreciate you taking the time to offer the advice and share what helped you along. I'll certainly take the advice and use it. My only problem is getting my ring finger to stay straight up and not follow the pinky and middle finger everywhere. Oh well, practice is the key I suppose. Again, thanks a bunch.

I find it helps a lot to make your fingers more parallel to the plane of the fingerboard than you normally would to precisely play notes...that way, they kind of naturally mute...and you dont really fret it with the tip, you fret it more near your fingerprint, that way the fingertip can mute the string above it. also, strumming your ass off is cool, but make sure the strum only hits the 3 or 4 strings around your target string...you cant mute em all. hope this helps

2stepgranny explained it pretty well.
I mute all the strings at once with my ring finger as much as possible and then play the individual notes. Therefore while you strum you wont get any other sounds. I try and do the same thing during the second part(leave all your sights on...).

A metronome will also help immensely with this song. I preach timing a lot on these boards, but having that ticking going has helped me more than anything in the past six months.
Get a digital one that has some bells and whistles and a headphone jack if you live with someone (they'll kill you while you sleep if you have a metronome going for hours on end...).

If using a metronome don't you need to know how many beats per minute a song is... I can't find that anywhere for DMB tunes.. any ideas?
