The stone

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

The stone

Unread post by coyoteguy » Wed Jul 14, 2004 5:09 pm

I am having big time troubles with The Stone and the more I try and mess it up, the more I really want to learn it. Ok, everything sounds fine in the intro untill I play the 2 3 2 on the D string, for some reason that small little part doesn't sound correct. Again, when I play the 5 then 2, 3, and 5, 5, that sounds ok, just the 2-3-2 bit. Any help would be great. Thanks

Just listen to the song, its in there, Dave just plays it fast as shit (which isnt a surprise) but the 2 3 2 part is correct. If it isnt sounding right maybe your string is out of tune?

If this is throwing you off here is it more explained:
On the D play it on the second fret
Then on the D play it on the third fret
Finish on the D play it on the second fret
So you just go second fret to third fret back to second fret...thats it

The reason why it doesn't sound correct is that i'd bet you are playing the entire lick with an even tempo. The problem is that if you listen closely, there is a very slight, yet noticeable pause in part of the intro lick. If you don't play the lick with this pause and try to play along with Dave, it will sound wrong. Here's where the pause is: [indicated by (p)]

Code: Select all

E:-----------------------------------------------------------------------
B:-----------------------------------------------------------------------
G:-----2----------------------------------2-----------------------------
D:---------3---5-5--2-3(p)-2----------------3----5-5---2-3(p)-2----
A:-5----------------------------------5---------------------------------
E:-----------------------------------------------------------------------

It can be difficult to get that slight pause down because it happens so fast. Although, once you learn it and play it correctly a few times, it becomes a walk in the park. Try starting off realllly slow to get the pause down. Another method to help you get the lick down smoothly is to think about it differently in your mind. Think about the lick as if it is starting at the 2 on the D string that occurs after the pause. Like this:

Code: Select all

E:-----------------------------------------------------------------------
B:-----------------------------------------------------------------------
G:-------2------------------------------------2-------------------------
D:-2----------3---5-5--2-3(p)---------2--------3----5-5---2-3(p)---
A:-----5------------------------------------5---------------------------
E:-----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's the same exact lick, just arranged so it makes the pause more noticeable. There's a slight pause at the end of that lick. Hope that helps. Any questions, just ask and i'll try to help.

if you listen to the song it isnt as fast as it sounds. the 232 part is correct, it is alternately picked but not fast. just play it with a down up down motion as if you were strumming a chord and it will come to you. once you figure it out it should all just flow together.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

people give dave too much credit for the speed in the song... especially the intro/verse.. its just not that fast. all it takes is practice.. start slow, then get faster. make sure you can play it cleanly.

the hardest part of the song is the chorus -> verse.. IMO anyway...
