This is strange because there is a JTR and a John The Revalator on this site. The tabs are pretty much the same but JTR has more to it i think. Also the lyrics are mildly different. JTR seems to be missing the "whose that writing part". They are definatly versions of the same song but what is up with dave doing two completely different covers of it?
I know Phil Keaggy did a version of it. I dont think he wrote it though. On the Crimson and Blue album it said arranged by Phil Keaggy and L Nichols. Then on other songs it says written by Phil Keaggy. So I dont think he wrote it. He must have just wrote new music to the lyrics.

ya, there's more lyrics than jsut the chorus in common.guitardmb wrote:I googled it and found that the original lyrics to that song were written by a Blind Willie Johnson. But like nitro said the only similar lyrics are the whose that writing.
Still seems strange why he would do that but whatever.
and this song has been covered by soooo damn many people its crazy.

I know Dave and Tim played it in like 99 and it was then called John The Revalator. I think that was a true cover. JTR has the jam at the end and stuff, so its like DMBs revised version of the song. I think.

the original song is weird, its a gospell song somewhat, then aparently some band named ollabelle covered it, or maybe its just the original version ive got, but i had the old original transfered from vinyl. original song was cool too.Nitro1515 wrote:The guitar parts and lyrics are completely Dave's own work, except for the line "whose that writing its John the Revelator" from an old folk or blues song, so that is why John The Revelator is a cover. JTR on the other hand is not a cover since that line is not in it.
