Question about humidity

Unread post by Grachi » Sat Nov 05, 2005 2:45 am

Ok basically i have this old fashioned humidifer that is a little sponge in a plastic case with a hole in the top and you wet it and put it in your case and there you go, your guitar case is humidified. And my dorm room is dry.

The contrast is so different that the tuning on my little e string is lower once i take the guitar out of the case. So what do I do? Should I take the case out into the room, open it and just let it adjust to the humidity level? Or do I take the humidifer out and let the case be closer to the levels in my room? I don't have a meter to measure but i dont keep the sponge thing wet very often only after I notice the sponge has gone dry do i wet it, even then i don't soak it.

Or could it be that I am totally wrong and that's not why my e string magically is a lot lower once i take it out of the case. I did just replace the strings like 5 days ago, but it is only affecting the little e string.

First of all, get a humidity gauge, i have the planet waves one. Second of all, is it a sound hole humidifier? I had one that i use to just put in my case and the same thing happened, get a sound hold humidifier, you will probably see a big difference. My dorm room is also very dry, i try to keep the AC/Heater off as much as possible and only turn it on when needed. If you can control it try doing that, you will see a big difference.

Or you can buy a humidifier for your room, now you wont have a dry dorm room.

My suggestion is if it is only your e string that is going out of tune practice tuning it up by ear. This will help you in the long run with ear training and its cheaper than going out and buying a new humidifier!
