best songs for beginners

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I have to say that deff by far the easiest song ever to play is proudest monkey. i don't know how good you are, or what level you're at, but here are some easy songs, in my opinion. Crash, is a farely easy song, the only thing is, it may be hard at first to keep the hand position, it can get tireing. there are a few songs where the main riff is pretty easy, but the rest of the song is a bit more involved, give Big Eyed Fish a try, the intro sounds awesome, the verse isn't too hard, but a little bit more advanced. same with typical situation, the intro is very easy and simple. but i have to say, the song that sounds best for its difficulty level is All Along the Watchtower. just work on getting the three main hand positions down, and its pretty much the entire song, and it sounds really cool. one last song is OSW, it sounds harder than it is. read the fingers that kanter says dave uses, and once you get the feel of it, the hand position doesn't change too much, you just move a couple of fingers (this is not the first intro that kanter has, that is harder, i'm talking about the intro on the cd's). i hope i could help you out, and i hope that's what you were looking for. Good luck, just remember....practice practice practice.

since satellite was the first song i learned, i have to say that is an excellent choice. it works on a couple of different things, technically: 1. finger stretching 2. alternate picking. It helps with other dave songs as well, as he use the same structure a lot.

I'll also add:

Don't Drink the Water and Crush although they're in drop D, they're relatively easy. Crush takes time but its straight forward.

I wouldn't say OSW is a great beginner song, cause the timing is tricky in a some parts and theres sliding

Say Goodbye is a good place to start, although problems with rhythm often arise - but the chorus is easy and fun.

Song that Jane Likes is all standard chords, but the quick changes is good practice.

I'll Back You Up is easy and its a good one to practice singing with, because, well, its pretty easy.

Gravedigger is a good one. just basic chords but always good for practicing rhythm and strumming.

some Dave Covers are also good ones to start out with - Wild Horses, The Maker, Long Black Veil, etc.

hope this helps,

peace,
Ken
good, and you?

diggin a ditch, bartender, halloween, grey street, where are you going, actually almost all of busted stuff, with a couple exceptions, is pretty easy.

I agree that satellite may be a good starter, but i doubt many begginers can pull off that strech.

the only reason i think crash and satellite are good starter songs is because most casual fans only know those two songs so they'll spend all of their practice times solely to those songs. my opinion anyway

crash is a great beginner song but hands do tend to get quite tired...I dont think sattelite is very good to start with because of that horrifyingly painful stretch that i STILL can't do very well... Crash, Gravedigger, Don't Drink the Water, Too Much...wow, all the songs we've listed here we make it sound like more than half of Dave's stuff is easy lol I'm fairly new to guitar myself but instead of learning "the basics" I just bought the guitar to learn DMB songs and what I found is once you get the feel of Dave's style learn his different chord progressions-which this site is GREAT for-you'll find more and more of Dave's stuff easy...just a lil lil for you beginners like me out there :)
What I want is what I've not got, but what I need is all around me.

hmm...the first dave song i learned was lie in our graves, and then i learned stuff like satellite and so much to say....
really, satellite's stretches arent bad, even for beginners. if you cant stretch that far, you should try anyway, because going for it will increase your strength and stretching ability. just dont get too frustrated.
