buzzing low E?

Unread post by nugsta25 » Wed Feb 18, 2004 6:58 pm

My low E will not quit buzzing!! I've adjusted the truss rod(the right way, and not too much) but it still buzzes. I've heard that Elixers do that. Does anyone else find this with Elixirs?? Should I go to the guitar shop? More truss rod??

Is it buzzing on certain frets, or does it buzz when played open? What gauge strings are you using? Try a heavier-gauge string first, if it still buzzes, check the bridge & the nut at the top, you might need to adjust/replace one of those. If they look OK, site your guitar to see how straight the neck is, you may need adjust the truss-rod more. As a last resort, sometimes individual frets stick up too far & need to be sunk-in more----but don't do that yourself, unless you really know what your doing.
...If it still buzzes, then I'd take it to the pro's for an opinion. I actually don't have a guitar, or have ever played one.......but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

It buzzes when fretted, but not when open. I use Elixer lights. I will try the heavier guage next time I buy though.I don't know what you mean by "sight the neck." Also I do not know much about how the nut or bridge should be. The action is relatively low compared to other guitars I've played. Whenever you adjust the truss rod what does it actually adjust? the action? Thanks

Pick up the guitar & hold it w/ the head/neck facing away from you, lift it up eye-level so you can see if it's bowed or straight, if you bought the guitar used, maybe someone who didn't know what they doing torqued on the truss -rod too much.

Look at the nut & bridge just to make sure that the string is properly set in the notch.
When you adjust the truss-rod ultimately you raise or lower the action on the guitar by 'bending' the neck a little.

Your action is more-than-likely just set to low for light strings. Hope this helps.

So the lower the action, the heavier the guage need be, and vice versa?
